James McGinty

James J. McGinty, MD, FACS, joined the Department of Surgery at St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital Center in August, 2003, and currently practices and teaches at both Mount Sinai St.Luke’s and Mount Sinai Roosevelt hospitals. After completing his fellowship training in Minimal Access Surgery at Columbia and Cornell Universities, Dr. McGinty was the first to perform laparoscopic bariatric surgery, as well as other advanced minimally invasive and robotic techniques at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt. At present, Dr. McGinty serves as Vice Chairman for the Department of Surgery, Chief of the Division of Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery and Residency Program Director. His academic appointment is Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Dr. McGinty strives to improve patient care through education of surgeons-in-training. In 2003, Dr. McGinty introduced simulation technology to the program and co-founded the Center for Simulation, Training and Robotic Surgery at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt. In addition to advancing the surgical skills of residents, medical students and other surgeons, Dr. McGinty collaborates with researchers from the hospital to develop new surgical techniques and technology. Additionally, he has co-authored multiple research papers with the researchers in the New York Obesity Research Center. He has presented his work on the national and international level. Dr. McGinty is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of multiple professional societies including the American
Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (ASMBS). He serves on several committees for the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and is on the Board of Directors for the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS). He has been featured in the print and television media.
Born in Indiana and raised on the New Jersey shore, Dr. McGinty graduated Boston College with a degree in biology. He is a graduate of Drexel University School of Medicine and the general surgery residency program of Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery.
