Dr. Thodiyil is Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. After graduating from the University Of Ibadan, Nigeria, he completed a general surgery residency at the Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK. Dr. Thodiyil then undertook advanced fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and the Cleveland Clinic where he trained under Dr. Philip Schauer. He also completed a fellowship in esophageal surgery at the University of Southern California and Los Angeles County Medical Center under Professor Tom DeMeester, a world leader in surgery of the esophagus.
Dr. Thodiyil was previously attending surgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and at New York Methodist Hospital. His current affiliations also include the Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital, Mount Sinai St Luke’s Hospital and Mount Sinai Brooklyn.
Board Certification & Qualifications
Dr. Thodiyil is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Thodiyil is also certified in General Surgery in the United Kingdom by the Intercollegiate Specialty Board in General Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Dr. Thodiyil is experienced in the use of the Da Vinci Robot and is a certified Proctor having supervised and trained many surgeons in this leading edge surgical technology.
Dr. Thodiyil offers a comprehensive range of services for weight loss surgery, including revision surgery. He performs the full range of bariatric surgical procedures, including adjustable gastric band, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, single loop duodenal switch as well as complex revisional procedures for failed bariatric procedures.
He is also experienced in the surgical treatment of disorders of the esophagus and stomach utilizing state of the art robotic surgery. He undertakes treatment for heartburn and swallowing disorders, including revisions of failed fundoplication, paraesophageal hernia, esophageal motility disorders and cancer of the esophagus and stomach.
