Dr William B Inabnet III is the Chairman of Surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and Eugene W Friedman Professor of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr Inabnet attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his undergraduate and medical school education. He completed a 5 year residency in general surgery with Dr Richard Prinz at Rush Medical College and Rush-Presbyterian-St Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Dr Inabnet then completed a fellowship in endocrine surgery at Cochin Hospital in Paris, France where he trained under Professor Yves Chapuis, a world leader in the field of endocrine surgery.
Board Certification & Qualifications
Dr. Inabnet is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. An international authority in the field of minimally invasive endocrine surgery, Dr Inabnet has pioneered new techniques in minimal access endocrine neck surgery as well as adrenal and pancreatic surgery. Dr Inabnet is also a leader in the field of minimally invasive bariatric surgery with an interest in disorders of the endocrine system in obese patients, especially type 2 diabetes. Dr Inabnet is a co-investigator for 1 of 6 US medical centers to receive multimillion dollar NIH funding to study bariatric surgery over 5 years (the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery) and recently launched the Diabetes Surgery Study, a randomized controlled trial that compares best medical therapy to gastric bypass in slightly overweight patients with type 2 diabetes. He holds numerous leadership positions in the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, American Association of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Inabnet has been performing laparoscopic bariatric surgery since 1999. He performs all the different types of weight loss surgery including RNY gastric bypass, LAP-BAND®, duodenal switch, sleeve gastrectomy, and revisional procedures.
Publications & Special Interests
Dr Inabnet has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as 3 textbooks including the recently released book “Endocrine Surgery: Principles and Practice”. He lectures throughout the world and was recently inducted into the Society for University Surgeons as well as the French National Academy of Surgery, a rare honor for non-French surgeons.
