Yulia Zak

Dr. Yulia Zak is a fellowship-trained minimally invasive surgeon, specializing in bariatric and foregut surgery.

Dr. Zak earned her medical degree from Downstate Medical Center before completing general surgery residency at Stanford University and advanced minimally invasive gastrointestinal and bariatric fellowship training at the Massachusetts General Hospital.  Dr. Zak is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Her clinical focus is on laparoscopic surgery of the gastrointestinal tract and operative treatment of obesity.  Dr. Zak believes in a multidisciplinary approach to complex clinical problems, and addresses them with high-quality, compassionate care.  She performs different types of weight loss surgery, including sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and revisional procedures.  She also treats diseases of the esophagus and stomach, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, paraesophageal hernia, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, cancer of the esophagus and stomach, and others.  She utilizes the minimally invasive (laparoscopic) approach most of the time, but also performs open surgery when necessary.

Dr. Zak’s research is focused on surgical education.  She has completed the Stanford Surgical Education and Simulation fellowship, and currently serves as the Assistant Program Director for the General Surgery residency program and Mount Sinai Beth Israel.
