Hospital Discharge

What Determines When I’m Discharged?
If order for you to be discharged from the hospital, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • You are tolerating an oral diet
  • Your pain is adequately controlled with oral medications
  • You are disconnected from your intravenous line

Since everyone’s experience in the hospital is slightly different, we cannot predict with absolute certainty how many days you will spend in the hospital after surgery. However, the typical hospital stays for weight loss surgery are as follows:

Operation Typical Length of Stay
LAP-BAND® – Same day surgery or 1 night if you have sleep apnea
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy – 1 night
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass – 2 nights
Laparoscopic Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS) – 3 nights
Revisional Bariatric Surgery – 3-4 nights or more
